A hand shook his bare shoulder.

“Time to get up, boy,” Grampa said. “How ’bout oatmeal for breakfast?”

Oliver rubbed the sleep out his eyes. His skin itched. Didn’t anybody wash around here? Maybe he could sneak in a swim this afternoon, especially if Finn came by again.

His new friend showed up right after school and taught Oliver how to monkey up onto one of the large bollards. They jumped into the harbor, swam to the ladder, climbed out and dove in again. What fun! When the Hammonton tooted its arrival, they raced up the pier and scrambled down to the smooth black rocks across from the yard office, where Sparky tied up in Oliver’s real life. Finn lay down on his back and closed his eyes, water dripping from his overalls.
